Till 1878 Monet lived at Argenteuil. The two road and rail bridges rebuilt after the war were a subject Monet repeatedly painted, and here he could experiment with the spatial effects of diagonals. Engineering achievements using iron, and steaming railway trains or the flow of traffic across a road bridge, also introduced an element of modernity into Monet's landscapes.
