Mt. Kerlingarfjall (585 m) in Snæfellsnes in W-Iceland, seen across the crater Rauðakúla. Both are of volcanic origin, but very different in colour and appearance. Rauðakúla is a scoria crater from an eruption some 4000 years ago, covered with loose reddish rocks. Kerlingarfjall is a solid clump of brownish hyaloclastite (cemented volcanic ash), formed in a subglacial eruption during the ice age. Note the child in the crater for scale.
