Funningur (pop. 70) is a town on the Faroe Islands, on the north-west coast of Eysturoy, just below the Faroes' highest mountain, Slættaratindur (882m). Tradition says that the first settler on the Faroe Islands, a Norwegian viking named Grímur Kamban, put his house down in Funningur in the 9th Century AD. The wooden turf-roofed church dates from 1847 and stands at the water's edge.
