Killer tomatoes: Fridheimar tomato greenhouse, Iceland, 2024

Fridheimar is a "destination" restaurant in Iceland that specializes in growing its own tomatoes and finding creative uses for them. The tomato soup is quite good. The tomato beer needs some work. The owners pride themselves in having found a creative solution to the inhospitable growing conditions for tomatoes with large greenhouses like the one depicted here. On a conducted tour, the bus driver said she had been there 50 times -- it appears to be a "must" if you book a tour around the Reykjavik area. Iceland seems like a long way to go for a bowl of tomato soup (sounds like a Seinfeld premise), but it is a remarkable operation.
