Kötlujökull

A view towards the glacial tongue of Kötlujökull, an outlet from the ice cap Mýrdalsjökull, where the prolific and dangerous volcano Katla lurks beneath. Some may find it hard to see a glacier in the photo, as most of it is black and covered with dirt. A few days after this photo was taken a massive flood from Kötlujökull washed away Iceland's Ring Road (which was repaired soon afterwards). The cause of the flood was either geothermal activity under Mýrdalsjökull or a small under-ice volcanic eruption.
