The Blue Lagoon resort in Iceland sits in a lava field, whose age can be seen in part by the amount of moss on the lava, which takes years to grow. Because of an active volcanic eruption nearby -- one has to drive through a more recently active lava field to get to the resort -- a barrier was built to protect the resort from being burned by the lava flow. The gap in the barrier is where the entrance road to the resort goes through it. A volcano of recent origin is in the background. At the time I was there, an actively erupting volcano could be seen from the resort -- too far in the distance for me to photograph.
