Crossing over the crest of a knoll on the downwind side, I come across a grazing juvenile deer oblivious to my presence. My camera is in the rucksack and unreachable without breaking the silence. I watch it for a while, then retreat out of sight and slowly get my camera out. When I reappear in view, it has heard the rustling noise and now stands alert, ears straining. There is just a second to capture a picture before it bounds away.
