The name of the bridge derives from a Native American legend that accounted for what is referred to by modern geologists as the Bonneville Landslide, which occurred somewhere between 500 and 1000 years ago, temporarily blocking the Columbia River and creating a natural "Bridge of the Gods." Eventually the river broke through the landslide, but a significant narrowing of the Columbia River continues to exist at this site, making the building of the modern bridge more practical. The bridge is named for the Native American legend and connects Cascade Locks, Oregon to Washington State near Stevenson.
