Wheaton has a complicated story. The cross in front of the grave designates him as a Confederate Officer. On line biographical information indicates that he was in fact born in Guilford, CT and was a Captain in Confederate Army, in which he commanded something called the Chatham Artillery. He was subsequent elected Mayor of Savannah three times, where is he is remembered for, among other things, establishing smallpox vaccination centers and prohibiting "the dusting and beating of carpets in the squares." Another complex Southern legacy.
