The monument was erected in 1935 during Japanese occupation to placate the spirits of the large number of giant cypresses that were cut down. Each level of the circular base represents 500 years of a giant tree's age, for a total of 3000 years. 「樹靈塔」建於1935年(民國24年)。舊時日本人大量砍伐阿里山千年神木，不少伐木工人罹患怪病而死亡，並發生多件怪事，日人認為是樹靈作崇而心生不安，因而興建樹靈塔以祭祀樹靈。樹靈塔底層的六層環狀物，代表被砍伐的神木年輪，每層環狀物代表五百年，總共加起來有三千年的歷史，由此可見當年林木的壯觀景象。 alishan.okgo.tw/scenic/3144.html
