detail of rock dam wall

Follow the rail line from Karonie to the quarry. Just beyond the quarry is a very well made walled dam, similar to Mundaring Weir that was built for the railways during the construction of the Trans Australian Railway. Notes from FB. The Karonie water supply system consisted of a high level concrete weir and a low level elexcavated dam, at Cardonia Rocks which is considerably higher than the siding at Karonie. The water went mostl by gravity down to the tank at the siding. The procedure was to open the valve at the weir to fill the pipeline then open the valve at the dam and close that at the weir. The water then siphoned out of the low level dam into the pipeline, and was then controlled by the valve at the tank at Karonie until cumulative air leaks broke the siphon. The dam had columns to carry a roof but I believe the roof was never built. The drains that diverted water from all around the rock outcrop were all done as part of the original work - I think in about 1916, and have no connection with WW2 prisoners. PA214126
