Rhyolite is a silica-rich volcanic rock, which commonly is light brown-to-orange in colour, but can be grey or even bluish and greenish, depending on its original mineral content and later "cooking" by geothermal heat. Rhyolite covers only 2% of Iceland's area, and the biggest rhyolite area is around and south of Landmannalaugar in the southern highlands. This colourful area attracts hikers and tourists. The slope here belongs to the mountain Breiðalda.
