Pansies

The garden pansy is a hybrid plant cultivated as a garden flower. The origin of the plants we now call pansy began in Iver, Buckinghamshire, England. In the early 1800's an inquisitive Lord Gambier and his gardener William Thompson began crossing various Viola species. Besides pansy there are many other names for this plant such as viola, violet, Pensée, Stiefmütterchen, Viola wittrockiana. The photo shows a rather small-flowered version.
