In Ishinomaki, I encountered this guy who had a smile on his face, despite the tsunami damage to his house. This was about 10 days after the earthquake. He said this was the first time he was able to make it back to his house from the shelter. He was deeply relieved to find that his cat had survived. When evacuating his house, he said that he first took some time to set bowls around the house, and filled them with as much water and kitty kibble as he could find. The shelter doesn't allow pets, but he said that he would be making the long walk back to his house each day so that his cat doesn't feel forgotten.
