The church at Grund in Eyjafjörður was built in 1904-05 at the behest of the local farmer, Magnús Sigurðsson. It is the biggest church in Iceland built by a single individual and is considered by many to be the country's most beautiful rural church. It is common to plant woods in churchyards and most often this is tastefully done, adding to the serenity and beauty of the site. At Grund, however, the trees are planted so close to the building as to almost hide its ornamental beauty - at least in my opinion.
