Hjalteyrarverksmiðjan

The herring factory at Hjalteyri was built in 1937 and closed in 1966. According to some sources it was the biggest herring factory in Europe at its time. The factory was built in record time, with liquid concrete kept warm in giant tubs of heated water so construction could take place in the north-Icelandic winter in time for the next herring season to save its builders from bankruptcy - which it did. Now the concrete hulk is partly used by artists, a diving outfit and experimental halibut farming.
