Mackerel mania has gripped Iceland! The fish was rarely seen in Icelandic waters until a few years ago, but with warming sea temperatures there is a full-scale invasion going on. Huge schools of fish go right to the shore and in many towns hordes of people fish it from the piers. We tried it from the harbourside at Garðurinn in SW-Iceland, with a fishing rod with four baits - in two throws in 3 minutes we had 6 fish! Not only is the Atlantic mackerel a beautiful fish, but it is really tasty and wonderfully fatty and must be eaten quickly, unless smoked or cured.
