Eruption!

The volcanic eruption at Fimmvörðuháls (Five cairns pass) in South-Iceland, viewed from the farm Fljótsdalur, which is as far as one can get on an ordinary passenger car to the volcano. The eruption is at a most fortunate place, in a pass between two glacier-covered volcanoes - Katla and Eyjafjallajökull - where eruptions in the past have triggered huge floods (the one caused by Katla in 1918 is thought to have briefly surpassed the Amazon to become the biggest flow of water on Earth). Instead, the relatively tame eruption has become a big tourist attraction, and perhaps people have become too unafraid, as today a new fissure opened, and some 50 tourists had to be evacuated by helicopter from the mountain - and others have been escorted back with frostbite after venturing in jeans and light jackets on a 5 hour mountain trek in freezing temperatures and stiff winds. I hope to get to see the eruption at a closer distance in the next days, if the area does not get sealed off again.
