Boutaskiouin, view from the French colonial fortress, Jebel Sahro
The fortress was built to subdue the local Ait Atta Berber tribe, which was the last to submit to French colonial rule after the establishment of a French protectorate in 1912. A fierce battle in 1934 between the French forces and the Ait Atta, encamped opposite on Bou Gafer, was won by the French only with the use of aerial bombardment.
