A view over the small hamlet at Laugarás in S-Iceland (pop. 123), where the main industry is vegetable growing in greenhouses. The glacial river Hvítá (White river) runs past Laugarás; the bridge dates from 1958. In the distance is a duststorm from the barren highlands, which are unsheltered by snow, which is somewhat unusual in mid-November. One of the country's most important historic sites, Skálholt, is located by Laugarás. It was the seat of the bishops of the southernmore and bigger of Iceland's two sees for almost 750 years, from 1056 to 1801.
