Ground 2009: Pumice
The dark volcanic pumice from the volcano Hekla can fertilize the ground in some instances, as it contains minerals easily leaked away by water and thus usable for vegetation. On its own and unmixed with organic soils it is loose and erosion-prone in the windy and cold climes of the Icelandic highlands, and plants find it difficult to shoot roots. That does not mean that they do not try - and sometimes succeed.
