Markarfljót

UPDATE: Three successive big volcanic floods occurred in Markarfljót on 14 and 15 April 2010, as a 2 km long fissure opened up under the Eyjafjallajökull glacier, and sent huge volumes of meltwater cascading down the valley, causing damage to roads and farmland and people being evacuated. Markarfljót is a glacial river in S-Iceland, about 100 km long, here viewed from the mount Stóra-Dímon. It meanders through a broad plain, and was considered a menace until levees were constructed to control its flow in the 1930s and 40s.
