The beach at Djúpalónssandur below Mt. Snæfellsjökull at the tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in W-Iceland. It is a pebble beach where the sea has carved out coves and rock formations in some 2000+ year old lava flows. It is now part of the Snæfellsjökull National Park. The coastal tip of Snæfellsnes is a wonderland for hikers and nature lovers, but is uninhabited and inhospitable. In the rowboat age it was, however, the site of some of the biggest fishing outposts in Iceland, due to its proximity to rich fishing grounds.
