Hekla

A view to the volcano Hekla from hay-fields in Landsveit, S-Iceland. The volcanic ash from Hekla eruptions makes for fertile soils, but big eruptions can cause havoc for vegetation and agriculture. The first big eruption in Hekla since Iceland's settlement, in 1104, laid waste to many farms. Hekla has erupted four times since 1970, but those eruptions have been relatively tame. Hekla is one of the most productive volcanoes on planet Earth in terms of volume of lava.
