Canary pine

Pinus canariensis, the Canary Island pine, is a large, evergreen tree native and endemic to the outer Canary Islands, including in Tenerife, where this shot is taken. It is a subtropical pine and does not tolerate low temperatures, but is one of the most drought-tolerant and fire-tolerant pines. It has long needles, that help it capture mist from the atmosphere. It is quick to put root in newish lava flows, where few other plants find a foothold. The lava field on the picture is believed to date from 1492, when Christopher Columbus observed a "fire" on Tenerife on his first voyage to America.
