Bendethera Homestead, Deua River Valley NSW

Deua R valley. 1962, 28th Sept to 1st Oct. My notes.. www.flickr.com/photos/spelio/2384362356/ record the trip, which was with the University of NSW Bushwalking Club. Glen Bryden was on this trip with me. We did 3hrs caving. I was in the process of becoming an Associate member of SUSS, and joined this group while attending Sydney Technical College in Harris St. Ultimo. I hitched down from Sydney, walked a long way out of Braidwood, then was picked up by some of the bushwalking party, and drove the rest of way past "Krawarree" homestead. We walked S the next morning, crossed the Shoalhaven R. and climbed the range. There were no roads in from the west as far as I know, in those days. The only access was from Moruya, via a very rough and steep track, that required logs dragged behind the bullock or horse drawn wagons to slow the descent. We climbed East over the range down into the Deua River Valley. This is the old homestead, which we camped in. Don't remember who the two figures are in the shot, I have a few other photos of the groups and the caves. Kept all the negs, so can scan them later. There where some nice bits and pieces lying around in those days! Note the pot! Can't find any other shots of the homestead on the web apart from this one. See also NLA site.. www.pictureaustralia.org/apps/pictureaustralia?action=PAD... or protocat.nla.gov.au/Record/3585957 Another shot of the homestead here.. nla.gov.au/nla.pic-vn3585957 1863 The original homestead is burnt down. The family live in a barn until the second homestead is built near the existing stockyards. This homestead stood until it was burnt down in the 1968 bushfires. Notes next to the photo in my album..... We slept in left side of the house in one of the 3 rooms. Cooked in large open fireplace in the centre room. Swallows nested in the rafters. There were a few rifles in the house belonging to people from Moruya who came twice a year to collect a few cattle from around the farm. All equipment brought in from Moruya, 60 miles away, on horse back along an old track made by the original settlers.
