Kirkjan í Bæ

The Lutheran country church at Bær in Borgarfjörður in W-Iceland was built in 1967, replacing an older church. The church at Bær has, however, an almost 1000 year old history behind it. In 1030 AD Rodulf, a roving preacher and monk from Normandy, established the first Christian school in Iceland at Bær, where would-be priests of the newly Christianized Iceland got their education. A reminder of this history is the church bell in Bær, which is at least from the 12th Century, and may have been brought by Rodulf. It is said to be one of the three oldest church bells still being used in the Nordic countries.
