The church at Ingjaldshóll in Snæfellsnes in W-Iceland was built in 1903; it is claimed that it was the first church in the world built entirely of concrete. The church was said to be third in importance in Iceland in old times, owing to income from the rich fishing grounds near the tip of the Snæfells peninsula. An old legend has it that Christopher Columbus wintered here in 1477, and learned about the sailings of Vikings to lands west of Iceland.
